Urinary Tract Infection
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract – the bladder and the urethra. Women are at greater risk than men. Infections limited to the bladder can be painful and annoying; however, serious consequences can occur if a UTI spreads to the kidneys.
DNA-based analyses of bacteria in urine samples can complement and extend traditional diagnostic tests by rapidly and accurately identifying specific pathogen species. Molecular tests offer increased specificity and sensitivity, rapid turnaround times, and can identify multiple pathogens in one assay, all from a single urine sample.
